That CPU will be fine for a GTX970 especially if you use the variable swan_sync to give the GPU a full core.

Will work if motherboard support Maxwell, could not find any info for your board. If not detected you might need to update bios.

I am concerned you may not get a GTX970 to fit in that case looking at the layout on Ebay.

Pardon me asking but what is swan_sync? How do I use it? Can I on this gpu? (gtx 650ti boost) A simpler way is to just reserve a CPU core for the GPU. You can do that via BOINC Manager, setting the percentage of processor used so that one core is always left free. Your CPU has dual cores hyperthreaded, or 4 virtual cores. So you can set the processors used at 75% and it should leave you one core free. (Note that this is not the same as the amount of CPU time used, which should normally remain at 100%.) You can also use an app_config.xml file to reserve a core, but that is slightly more involved. They both achieve essentially the same results as SWAN_SYNC.

Okay, I have reserved one cpu core, thanks.

I am concerned you may not get a GTX970 to fit in that case looking at the layout on Ebay. How about this? http://imgur.com/R3tdx0I I had to remove the dvd drive and my current one now fits. Will the 970 be bigger than my current one?

That pic was taken before i cleaned the mess up a bit haha

A GTX970 is about 10 and a 1/2 inches long. Have you got that space?

A GTX970 is about 10 and a 1/2 inches long. Have you got that space? No, I do not have that space sadly. Should I buy a mini gtx 970, or get a pci extender?

A mini GTX970 will be slightly slower (3%) but also use less power and less heat. Don't overclock as they have little headroom. Buy secondhand to get a deal.

Used, maybe from the likes of Ebay. I don't know which country you are from but UK prices are still quite high even if you can obtain a new one.

In america where I'm from, used gpu's of that, the prices are around the same for a new, larger gtx 970. Seems a bit crazy to me. Well, I'm kinda stuck at what to do at this point when it comes to gpu. All of the high-end ones seem to be bigger than my case can handle....

I'd at least like to get the projects done in less than a day. Right now mine takes 1 day and 5 hours, and I still have over 20 hours to go...

I'd wait a short time until they release the new app and get a 1070 or 1060.

I don't know how available it is right now, but Gigabyte has a mini-ITX 1070.

I don't know how available it is right now, but Gigabyte has a mini-ITX 1070. My gosh, that is awesome! Minigtx 1070's and I see there will probably be a mini 1080. Truly amazing. Thank you for informing me about this. I definitely will keep a sharp eye out for them! does anybody know if there will be an announcement when gpugrid will work with the 1070 and 1080?

I don't know how available it is right now, but Gigabyte has a mini-ITX 1070. Be advised buying such cards, as they have axial fan type cooling, that is they are emitting almost all the heat inside the case. So these cards can heat up a Mini-ITX case in no time.

Would any of you personally recommend I use this card on here since it takes about 1 day and 5-6 hours? I don't mind tasks that are longer, but this long?

Of course it misses the 1 day bonus, but it's still fairly efficient power-wise. Your energy usage is less than many of the cards that finish a WU in 12 hours or less.

That 350 Watt PSU might not be up to much. The potential 110W from your GTX650Ti + 74W CPU (which is powerful enough) + ~50W from other components is probably all you want to be pulling through it. Even the 145W TDP of a GTX970 might be too much, remembering that it's an old, used PSU for a midi tower.

I see now. I have a 600 watt psu though that I replaced with my 350 watt, but that shouldn't affect power consumption negatively right? Probably not. If your 350W was stock it was probably very inefficient. If the new PS is ECO rated such as bronze, silver, gold, or platinum it should be much more efficient and your energy consumption should go down. As with any other component it's good to read reviews when you purchase a new PS.

Thanks, yeah I've had it for a while, it's a corsair cx 600m. I never even used the 350 watt with my gpu though because I didn't want to take a risk, should've made it a bit more clear haha.

Your Corsair is decently energy efficient: 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified. The GTX 460 is Fermi class and it's very inefficient by todays standards.

Hmmm, as a temporary gpu for my 2nd pc, should I buy a gtx 650ti boost like my current one? I wouldn't bother getting a temp usually but they sell them for a pretty good deal on ebay (less than 100 dollars, or early 100's) What do you think? And alright, I'll have to think of something else to do with my 460 :(
ID: 43904 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Wait... I don't think that would work, I'd need an itx gpu for my 2nd pc case..
ID: 43905 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Buying a much older GPU isn't advisable. I wouldn't buy anything before the GTX900 series even if it was really, really cheap; the running costs compared to the performance is so poor. See what sort of GTX1060's turn up and there will eventually be a GTX1050 or similar. Anything with a Pascal architecture should be good for a few years (when there's a working app).

My opinion: wait for a GTX10xx GPU that fits your needs.
